Waikiki is the birth place of modern surfing. Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku, is generally regarded as the person who popularized the modern sport of surfing. He was also an Olympic champion in swimming and won multiple gold medals as well as breaking world time records. Between Olympic competitions, and after retiring from the Olympics, the Duke traveled to different places in the world, particularly Australia and the continental United States, to give swimming demonstrations. It was during this period that he popularized the sport of surfing, previously known only in Hawaii, by incorporating surfing exhibitions into these visits. Duke is known as the Father of Surfing and is regarding as a folk hero in Hawaii. He was the first person induced into both the Swimming and Surfing Halls of Fame. He is also a member of the Olympic Hall of Fame. The Duke left us to surf the perfect waves in Heaven in 1968, he was 77 years old. A statue at Waikiki beach in Honolulu also honors his memory. It shows Duke Kahanamoku standing in front of his surfboard with his arms outstretched. Many honor him by placing leis on his statue. In 2002, the Duke was featured on a first class letter rate postage stamp of the United States Postal Service.
